P. acnes is the most prevalent bacterium in sebaceous areas of the skin (2, 3) but is also abundant in dry areas (3). This bacteria is a Gram-positive, rod shaped, aerotolerant anaerobe. Slow growing and aerotolerant, this microorganism is part of the normal flora of healthy human skin, living deep inside pores and follicles. Propionibacterium acnes recently renamed Cutibacterium acnes, is a Gram-positive, non-spore-forming human skin commensal (normal bacteria of the skin) that prefers anaerobic growth conditions 1). Propionibacterium acnes is a commensal, non-sporulating bacilliform (rod-shaped), gram-positive bacterium found in a variety of locations on the human body including the skin, mouth, urinary tract and areas of the large intestine. This bacteria is a Gram-positive, rod shaped, aerotolerant anaerobe. Slow growing and aerotolerant, this microorganism is part of the normal flora of healthy human skin, living deep inside pores and follicles.

Propionibakteerit (Propionibacterium) on anaerobisten grampositiivisten sauvabakteerien suku. Ne on nimetty aineenvaihduntansa erityispiirteen mukaisesti: ne kykenevät tuottamaan propionihappoa käyttämällä epätavallista transkarboksylaasi-entsyymiä. Propionibakteereita elää ihmisten hiki - ja talirauhasissa ja muilla ihoalueilla. 2021-02-18 Educational video describing Propionibacterium Acne. Slow growing and aerotolerant, this microorganism is part of the normal flora of healthy human skin, living deep inside pores and follicles. Propionibacterium acnes is a Gram-positive, facultative, anaerobic rod that is a major colonizer and inhabitant of the human skin along with Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, Streptococcus, and Pseudomonas spp. The role of Propionibacterium acnes in acne and in a wide range of inflammatory diseases is well established.
